It's the day after the Emmys , and a bunch of people just won awards for shows that you have to add to your ever-growing watchlist. On top of that, you've probably heard about a number of important pop culture developments: Taylor Swift made an unexpected appearance, Mariska Hargitay made the case that Law & Order should really let her crack a smile every once in a while and John Mulaney got a whole punchline censored from broadcast.
There were a lot more musical numbers than expected and a lot of awards for Widow's Bay in what ended up being a surprisingly short ceremony, despite Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey's best attempts at stalling at the end. Let's go through the most viral moments so you'll be ready to navigate any Emmys small talk you come across.
Taylor Swift made an appearance. What could that mean?
My Swiftie card has been revoked because I doubted that Taylor Swift would appear at the Emmys, but sure enough, she pre-taped a sketch. In it, she plays a detective helping the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit sort through potential Easter eggs to solve a mystery.
It was nice of Swift to make a cameo for her friend, Mariska Hargitay, whose SVU character Olivia Benson is also the namesake of Swift's cat.
Even though Swift was at her new husband's football game hanging out with Tom Cruise during the show itself, she still managed to unleash pandemonium on the internet. Does anyone know what " saccharide, Aeries, from the vineyard, north or south " means? That's what she said directly to the camera during the sketch. According to Emmy producer Jesse Collins , Swift insisted that she include real Easter eggs. But which of them are really real??
Swifties — not including me, of course, because my fan club membership has been suspended for casting doubt on her omnipresence — have already begun trying to suss out what Swift could be trying to tell them.
Mariska Hargitay flips the script
I admit I cringed through many of Hargitay's first scenes because it's so unnerving to see her make jokes. On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, she's played a stern cop with a heart of gold who rarely cracks a smile for a whopping 27 seasons. But last night — in between cringing over those musical numbers, of course — she had me cracking up with her jokes about Dick Wolf and the number of Emmys she's won for SVU. Zero is a number!
My personal favorite bit came during her monologue, when she referenced Nicole Kidman's iconic AMC Theaters ad — and when Kidman responded, Hargitay ordered her to "zip it, movie lady." It was also delightful to see her dressed as a Game of Thrones characte r. It's like watching your history instructor dress up to teach a lesson they're particularly excited about.
I also have to give a shoutout to Knicks champ Jalen Brunson's appearance in Hargitay's opening number. He'll also be making his comedic debut soon, when he hosts Saturday Night Live later this month.
Everyone was thirsting after the cast of 'The Pitt'
There's something magical about seeing the people you hang out with every day dressed in full glam. That's what the cast of The Pitt is to the devoted fans on the internet: their coworkers who clean up well. They traded scrubs and hoodies for evening gowns and suits, and their admirers online couldn't get enough .
As far as the eyes could see across social media, people were thirsting for red carpet photos featuring the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center crew . The show is notorious for making audiences swoon with competency porn , and inspires a solid amount of fan fiction . But really, can you blame a fan for their enthusiasm?
John Mulaney gets an entire joke censored out
John Mulaney had audiences cracking up with his bit about how the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category is for real men. Why hasn't he hosted a major awards show yet, anyway?
"They can play anything, these nominees," he said. "Not just doctors. They can play a cop, or an FBI agent, or a secret agent and then that's it, no other examples."
My colleague on the ground at the ceremony, Taryn Ryder, assured me that the audience was losing it over that bit — and the one that followed, when he referenced some infamous comments DJ Khaled once made in a joke that was censored out of the broadcast.
In the video , we see that Mulaney is talking, but the audio is completely removed. Ryder confirmed that he was indeed referencing a certain act Khaled said he won't do in the bedroom.
Hopefully, Khaled, who's been known to post a viral video on social media from time to time, will respond in due time.
Meg Stalter might have been painted gold this whole time
We can always count on Meg Stalter to come dressed as something funny for a red carpet. She dressed as Kylie Jenner (to Paul W. Downs's Timothée Chalamet), a coffee cup and Diet Coke . I loved it when she wore a basic white tee and jeans to last year's Emmys.
This time, she stole the pre-show by dressing up in gold and body paint to resemble an Emmy statuette. That alone was funny, but I lost it when I noticed that she was still sitting around painted gold during the actual ceremony. That's how you commit to the bit, folks.
Keri Russell, call me?
I suppose I have to start by saying congrats to Matthew Rhys, who made Emmys history by winning in two lead categories at one ceremony for his roles on Widow's Bay and The Beast in Me. He already won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Americans, but what's most memorable about that role is that it's how he fell in love with his now-partner, Keri Russell.
I couldn't help but notice that Russell is an eight-time Emmy nominee, and unfortunately, also an eight-time Emmy loser. But it's incredibly impressive that she's been in contention so many times — and as someone who's covered a decade's worth of Emmys, I suspect that means her next role will be her best yet.
And because I'm nosey, I also couldn't help but notice that Rhys didn't thank Russell in either of his acceptance speeches, but that must mean that he was instructed not to. He would have atoned during the second one if the first omission was a true fluke. I was unnerved that we didn't get to see them hug during the broadcast, but thankfully, Ryder caught a video of the pair hugging it out post-win.
"She's always really the winner," Rhys told reporters of his partner after the show. "I think next year she might be in luck."
But seriously, Keri, if that guy bothered you, let me know.
Tom Holland was there just to support Zendaya
The biggest box office actor we've got was at the Emmys, but he didn't present any awards or walk the red carpet. Tom Holland was at the Emmys just to support his partner, Zendaya, who was a nominee. Not that she's any less of a star than Holland,, but you have to admire the way power couples have been letting one member shine at this particular show.
One of the most viral Tomdaya moments happened separately from them, though. Zendaya's stylist, Law Roach, who started a rumor at a prior awards show that the engaged couple was secretly married, suggested that they haven't officially tied the knot yet, but will after their next press tour. I'm happy to keep talking about them and speculating about their nuptials as long as they'd like me to.
