Why is a free download of Windows end up NOT free to activate?
发布时间:2026-10-22 | 浏览:1
I've upgraded my ASUS K6OIJ laptop with a new 512gb SSD, and new 8gb (2x4gb) memory. In doing so I needed to download Windows 10 as the original Windows 7 disappeared when the SSD was installed. Everything went fine until..
Not everything in W-10 was working right, and then, in very faint letters in the bottom right of the screen above the task bar, was the notice 'Windows 10 not activated. Active now in settings'. Okay, I'll do that.
Apparently the 'free' download of W-10 is not free, one must cough up $140 to activate the system. I understand the processing and licensing and other 'fees', but shouldn't this fact be disclosed on the download now page, so as not to make the user feel like they're being extorted?
Also, would anyone know where I could find a 'Core 2' processor (socket type- no soldered) for this unit?

The Windows 10 .iso is always free to download and use, but it has nothing to do with license, it is simply the .iso files. Licensing is a separate process. I definitely can see some clear messaging can help, because I've helped other users who through the .iso they downloaded comes with license. I would encourage you to submit this as a feedback for Microsoft via the Feedback hub (Windows + F). Microsoft ended the Windows 7/8/8.1 to Windows 10 upgrade back in 2016, but for years, they never closed that pathway for license check until last Sept. The annoucement was released here: https://devicepartner.microsoft.com/en-us/commu... As for your hardware question, I suggest you contact Asus' support for a better answer than getting it from a Windows forum. Or you can also post it in Asus' community https://zentalk.asus.com/t5/english-community/c... 0 comments No comments
