1. See the sights
Stanley is easily explored on foot. Recently awarded the status of ‘city’, the main sights are located in the central area, even though the growing settlement now stretches a good distance along and above the shoreline.
Tour guides will show you the main points of interest and if you aren’t able to walk easily, there are many guides who will give you a vehicle tour. Visitors from cruise vessels will find many Stanley tours on offer and those visiting for a longer period of time can enquire at the Jetty Centre or click here to find a local guide.
Alternatively, pick up a map from the Jetty Visitor Centre and create your own route to include Christ Church Cathedral , the Whalebone Arch , Victory Green , Kay’s Gnome Garden, the whalebone display and commemorative monuments. The Historic Dockyard Museum is an ‘absolute must’ to learn more about our social and maritime history, flora, fauna and geology.
2. Enjoy the sounds Take a trip to the Cape Pembroke peninsula to enjoy the sounds of the shore. Self-guided walks take in the calls of the gentoo penguins beyond Yorke Bay Pond, waves crashing on the beautiful white beach of Surf Bay or the gentle lapping of the sea on the stunning sands of Yorke Bay. Listen out for seabirds – the gulls, geese and waders. Listen even more carefully and you may be rewarded by the grunts of a sealion, near or far! Take to the hills for the real ‘sound of silence’ on a calm day, or the wind whipping through the grass in a stiff breeze. All destinations can also be reached by vehicle. 3. Savour the tastes Relax in one of Stanley’s many cafes, bars, restaurants or pubs. There are many food and drink choices available from light snacks to full meals, hot drinks to something stronger. Soak up the atmosphere of a small café, stylish restaurant, local diner or traditional pub. Call in at our gin distillery or take home a jar of diddle-dee jam. Click here to browse all the eateries Stanley has to offer. 4. Experience the scents The summer months bring many sweet-scented flowers along with the return of the Magellanic penguins to Gypsy Cove . A stroll in the area will reveal pale maidens, vanilla daisies and scurvy grass. Bend low to take in the lovely smells to leave these flowers for all to enjoy. And catch the scent, as well as the braying sounds, of the penguins on the summer breeze. Take a self-guided walk, drive or taxi to get to Gypsy Cove. 5. Feel the quality Beautiful items are created from the sumptuously soft Falkland wool. Explore our shops to find numerous gifts and souvenirs, locally hand-crafted by knitting, crochet or felting. Each is individually created so you can be sure of a unique present with a lovely texture.
